In the implementation of their partnership, the financial services of a prominent technology company will play a role in broadening the reach of India's specified functional platform beyond its national borders, writes PaySpace Magazine.
An agreement was signed between Google India Digital Services Pvt. and the National Payments Corporation of India, responsible for creating a unified payment interface for the South Asian nation. This collaboration entails expanding service provision geographically by introducing financial solutions in other countries. The involved parties publicly disclosed this information on Wednesday, January 17.
A primary objective of the partnership between the technology giant's financial service and the Indian payment system is to streamline international operations for travelers from South Asia. Furthermore, this collaboration aims to establish digital payment platforms similar to UPI, with the development of comparable functional systems outside of India. UPI consolidates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile app on a unified platform. The partnership with Google aligns with the National Payments Corporation of India's efforts to enhance the South Asian country's standing in the global digital payments market. This collaboration will simplify money transfer procedures by reducing reliance on conventional channels for financial operations.
India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has expressed its commitment to globalizing UPI. In the previous year, India and Singapore connected their systems for real-time money transfers. India is also exploring potential financial services partnerships with other countries, including Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. However, there is currently no information on the commencement date of collaborations with these states.
Data from the central bank of India reveals that transactions amounting to 17.4 trillion rupees ($209 billion) occurred on the UPI platform in November.
Deeksha Kaushal, Director of Partnerships at Google Pay India, expresses satisfaction in supporting efforts to extend the reach of the mentioned platform in international markets. She notes that this collaboration represents another step towards realizing the goal of ensuring safe, convenient, and straightforward payments. Kaushal highlights that UPI showcases the transformative impact of introducing compatible digital infrastructure on a population scale to the global community. According to her, economies, as integral parts of such functional networks, gain greater influence than the sum of their individual components.
