The collaborative venture, named Mastercard NetsUnion, facilitates payment processing for transactions made in China using cards issued by major players in the fintech industry and Chinese banks, reports PaySpace Magazine. Additionally, Mastercard cards will now be accepted for both domestic and international purchases in an Asian country.

Michael Miebach, CEO of Mastercard, emphasized the joint efforts of the payment industry leader and its Chinese partner NUCC to streamline payment processes domestically and internationally, enabling transactions within China and abroad. It's noteworthy that Beijing has long contended with the entry of foreign payment systems while also presenting opportunities for overseas fintech enterprises due to its extensive payment market. In June 2015, Chinese authorities eased restrictions on foreign companies, allowing them to obtain licenses through local partnerships or acquisitions. This collaboration led to the formation of a majority-owned joint venture between Mastercard and NetsUnion.

In February 2020, the People’s Bank of China granted preliminary approval for the payment giant and its partner to initiate official preparations to establish a domestic bank card-clearing institution.

Ling Hai, chairman of the board of Mastercard NetsUnion, expressed plans to broaden the availability of Mastercard-branded products, offering Chinese consumers and businesses a wider array of options. Additionally, the venture aims to expand payment acceptance locations across the Asian country, ensuring seamless and secure payment experiences for all.
