In January, PayPal announced its decision to reduce its workforce, following a similar move in the previous year, reports Business Insider. CEO Alex Chriss conveyed to employees that approximately 2,500 positions, constituting 9% of the workforce, will be eliminated. This comes as part of the company's strategy to streamline operations for enhanced agility in meeting customer needs and driving profitable growth. Chriss emphasized the ongoing commitment to invest in areas fostering business growth while acknowledging the necessity of adjusting the workforce size.

The job cuts will encompass existing roles and the abandonment of open and future job listings throughout 2024. Notably, PayPal's stock has experienced a decline exceeding 20% in the past year. Chriss, who assumed the role of President and CEO in September 2023, recently revealed plans to introduce AI-driven tools aiming to transform commerce significantly. Among these innovations are "smart receipts" leveraging AI to provide personalized recommendations to customers via email receipts. Chriss sees these AI-powered products as integral to a "new chapter" for PayPal.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Chriss highlighted the vast potential of AI, emphasizing the value of the company's data in understanding consumer purchases and aiding merchants in their targeting efforts. PayPal's decision to cut jobs aligns with a broader trend, as various companies, including Amazon, Google, and UPS, have also announced plans for workforce reductions in 2024.
